Help Save the Clayton Frisco Depot

By Francis Boatwright Fuller

Choo! Choo! The Frisco Railroad Depot in Clayton is moving forward to be preserved!

Matthew Pearce, National Register from the State Historical Preservation Office in Oklahoma City, and three individuals from the Choctaw Nation: Rolene Schliesman, Architect Historian; Ian Thompson, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer; and Marshall Purvis, Architect Intern, met with 16 interested Clayton citizens in April.

After meeting with citizens at the depot and evaluating the condition of the building, they held a second meeting at KCounty Restaurant II in Clayton. A successful meeting was held with hearty discussion, questions, and answers.

"What needs to be done while pursuing grants," reiterated Ian Thompson, "is secure the Depot, a new roof, taller fence, and to take responsibility and keep an eye on it."

In order to know what grant to apply for, we need to know what would benefit Clayton more: A Historical Society, Museum, Chamber of Commerce, Community Center, Genealogy Society, or is it something else?

We ask for feedback from ALL of Clayton's citizens, and anyone else who has an opinion as to what would benefit Clayton the most.

Clayton's Frisco Depot needs a committee: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and two accountable individuals for the Treasurer's office.

To voice your opinion on what Clayton needs, please mail comments from the public to: Francis Fuller, P.O. Box 351, Clayton, OK 74536.

For more information, or to volunteer to be on the committee, please contact Clayton Town Council, P.O. Box 279, Clayton, OK 74536 or call Francis Fuller at 918-569-7866.
